Tonga has a very colourfull and attractive issue of
banknotes. Due to the climate (A common occurance on most island nations)
not many early banknotes have survived in a top condition. Since the first issue
in 1921 not much has changed from the design until 1966. The first issue 1921
to 1935 (Pick 1-4) had stirling printed on the right. The 1935 to 1939 issue
(Pick 5-8) had stirling deleted by black overprint. The 1940 to 1966 (Pick9-12)
had the denomination of the note instead of stirling printed on the right.
The Tongan predecimal issues have many different signatories on them.
